The amount of money which is spent repairing and helping to replenish America from Street Crime is one of the country's disadvantages for drawing in tourists. The fact that American government spends this much money on street crime is a public matter, so tourists know how common it is in the USA. Throughout one year, the total cost of repairs and insurance because of street crime was $3.8 billion1 which the American Federal Government had to pay off just because of street crime. This suggests that street crime in America is actually important for the country's reputation. Because of the amount of money having to be paid, the American reputation is threatened by the rate of street crime per year. This would effect the amount of tourists heading to America for a holiday or for immigration, because of the potential threat of being robbed on the street by someone, or even murdered. Therefore the amount of money spent of replenishing street crimes which happen everyday in America effects tourism and the longing of immigrants to live in America.
Secondly, since the rate of street crime in America is so high, there will be a lot of victims and witnesses of street crime. The witnesses and victims would most likely be scared and self-conscious about the fact that they could be victimized again, by being mugged, hurt, or sexually assaulted. This decreases the amount of people getting involved outside their homes, because victims and witnesses would be scared of the world outside and how common street crime actually is in America. This is an opinion which most of America believes, and most people around the world would believe for it to be true. Only an average of 40% of people feel safe walking alone outside at night, whereas in Canada (a country of similar size to America) 60% of people feel safe walking alone at night2. That’s 20% more people in Canada compared to America that feel safe to walk alone at night. This suggests that there have been more victims in America which makes it more unsafe to walk alone at night, which is why people are more worried. Therefore the information proves that it scares not just the victims and the witnesses, but also the whole of America, which is a problem for America's reputation.
But then on the other side of the argument, people who believe that street crime is not a major problem in America usually think this because of the major advance in technology. Since there have been more and more security systems being made, companies can afford to be better off. This decreases the amount of street crimes being committed because the culprits can be caught much easier. It is a known fact around the world that there has been a massive advance in technology worldwide and especially in major countries like the USA. Since more people have eftpos cards and electronic ways of spending and gaining money, cash theft has to be less common. But having this technology also means that there are more approaches to street crime3. Such as stealing an eftpos or credit card, because stealing cash is harder and the culprit would get less money. Mugging someone with a more threatening, powerful weapon would also be more possible because of the new technology and new ways to kill or harm people. In conclusion, new technology helps thieves like these to commit street crime, but also makes it harder for them because of the updated security systems. Which to some people make street crimes in America not as important as other situations.
Finally, another idea for the fact that street crime is important to be taken care of in America is that since in most states of America it isn't illegal to own a firearm. This would make it easier for culprits of street crime to threaten their victims. It is common sense that if someone is pointing an extremely deadly weapon at you that you will give them what they want. If the law in those states changed, the amount of muggings and street crimes in America will decrease dramatically. In 44 out of all the states in America, it is legal to openly carry a firearm4. This helps street crime to be committed, and is one of the reasons why it is so common in America. Study's show that in the states where street crime is more common, there are less laws against openly carrying and owning firearms. These laws therefore have a big impact on the amount of muggings and overall the amount of total street crimes in America, because it is easier to threaten innocent people for their money.
In conclusion, street crimes are just as/or more important as any other crime which is committed in America, and the threat should be taken care of by American government. The reasons being: It costs America's Federal Government $3.8 billion a year because of street crime; less people would feel safe in America's streets especially the millions of victims and witnesses; and because it isn't illegal to carry a firearm with you in most American states which makes it easier for people to threaten others for money. The only reason against the subject is because of the advance in technology. But there could be various outcomes to this reason for and against the fact that street crime needs to be abolished in America. Overall most people believe that street crime is a big problem in America, because of these 3 reasons, but the minority of the citizens of America believe that street crime is a small problem and doesn’t have a big impact. This proves that there is a big impact on the reputation of America because of street crime according to the majority of the people of the USA.
