America Is Fat
Currently
there is a large problem in America, and that problem is obesity. America is
the number one country for obesity across all ages, that’s nothing to be proud
of. 33% of American adults are obese in America, that is mortifying to realise
that 1 in 3 American adults are obese. (National
Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2010.) With all of these stats it’s no
wonder why America is #1 fattest nation. America needs to change their dietary
and exercise habits if they want to no longer be known as the fattest nation on
earth. Points that will be made include the effects McDonalds and other fast
food companies are making on this obesity crisis, and secondly the right to
feel comfortable in your own body while being obese.
Firstly,
McDonald’s, is one of the biggest fast food chains in the world and a leading
cause in why Americans are so fat. Don’t get me wrong McDonald’s brand have
done a good track record of doing nice charitable things which things include
charity fund named Ronald McDonald house for troubled families to focus on your
kids wellbeing. The brand uses sneaky underhand sale techniques to sell their
products this includes supporting big athletic events such as the Olympics,
McDonald’s also have a few charity trusts. They make out to be such a good
company to build a relationship with you, the customer so when you eat their
food you believe it’s the right thing to do. McDonald’s use psychiatric
techniques to induce their products as being what the customer needs, for example,
red and yellow psychologically induce hunger and happiness. They use these
marketing techniques to build a relationship between you and their product[EW1] [BS2] . It’s not just McDonald’s that do
this as well every fast food company do this and review customers response,
these companies are here to make money and as long as they keep making an
income they don’t care how its effecting the customers (11Fds Peter Beswick,
2016). American children from the age of 2-11 watch more than a thousand fast
food television ads a year. In 2012 a ridiculous 4.6 billion was spent on fast
food advertisements alone. These are all the reasons that are causing America
to be the fattest nation all these reasons contribute towards America obesity
crisis, because with the results these companies are having there is no wonder
why America is their number one client.
Secondly is it
alright to believe that Americans
being fat is all because it’s not alright is alright as long as you feel good
and comfortable? [EW3] [BS4] The
body positive movement is to change people’s thoughts and ideas about body
size, if a question was asked saying “what size is the opposite of overweight”
I think many people would reply saying “normal” (What Is the Body Positive Movement?, 2016) and that is what body positive movement is
trying to do, to change your idea of “normal is skinny.” The negatives outweigh
the positives in this argument considering people are dying just to feel
comfortable in their own bodies. this argument is reasonable until you are
reminded that being obese is a considered a medical condition, when you are
obese you have higher chances of gaining health complications such as, high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, type two diabetes and many more, you also
have higher chances of having a stroke, getting heart disease and even cancer. It
is wrong that teenagers are bullied for their body weight, no one has the right
to be abused by anyone about your body shape, I also agree that you should be
allowed to look how you want to, whether that being the clothes you wear or the
shape of your body, what I am not alright with is people dying before they
needed to. Yes, the argument is all well and good, until your life is on the
line.
In conclusion
fast food companies are a big part of the problem but will not be a part of the
solution, they are in it to make money and they know this method works so why
would big corporate companies sacrifice their business and money for the 33% of
Americans that are obese mainly due to their products. USA is taking a stand
against the obesity problem by adding a fat tax which is when the customer has
to pay a percentage of the unhealthy product directly to the government. This
fat tax is a brilliant idea to stop excessive spending on unhealthy foods considering
the companies will not change American families need to turn off the television
and show their children healthy ways to eat for future generations. Americans
all over need to change their dietary and exercise habits to ensure a happier
and healthier life.
