America Needs Tighter Alcohol Laws

America suffers too many alcohol related deaths every year and it is time that the American government puts a stop to this by introducing tighter alcohol laws. There are three main issues about alcohol in America: people being killed from overconsumption of alcohol, underage drinking which leads to deaths, and the fact that alcohol is a drug and is causing too many fatalities. This is going to explain why America should have tighter alcohol laws to prevent the immense amount of Americans being killed by alcohol.

Overconsumption of alcohol is a major problem in America and too many people are being killed by this. Each year 88,000 American citizens are killed from overconsumption of alcohol and one in three violent crimes have been caused by alcohol[1]. This means that roughly 241 people die from overconsumption of alcohol every single day. That is ten deaths every hour! Think about it, if that statistic is consistent every year that means that the current population of New Zealand could be wiped out in fifty years. This gives people an idea about extent of this ongoing issue in America. The rates of American deaths from alcohol have risen 37% since of 2002. 9.6 out of 100,000 people are killed from alcohol each year.[2] This does not include any violence or drunk driving deaths related to alcohol. This statistic only includes people being killed from overconsumption of alcohol. America really needs to go over the alcohol laws in America, too many citizens are getting out of control from alcohol and deaths are a reoccurring thing in the present day American society. These statistics really prove the size of this ongoing issue in America. Tightening the alcohol laws could possibly save those ten people being killed every hour, or even 88,000 people every year.

Underage drinking is a clear problem in the American society. In America, the law states that you are not allowed to drink under the age of 21. Over half of the American population aged twelve or older are current drinkers of alcohol[3]. This means an estimated 131.3 million people currently drink alcohol. This results in 4,358 under age deaths each year from alcohol-related car crashes, homicides, suicides, alcohol poisoning, and other injuries such as falls, burns, and drowning[4]. That’s about 5% of alcohol related deaths every year and they are not even supposed to be drinking alcohol. How would the parents of these kids feel about them being killed by alcohol?

Let’s face it, alcohol is a drug, it causes hallucinations, brain damage, several diseases, affects your thinking and you can get alcohol poisoning. All of these impacts on us can result in death. 88,000 Americans have suffered from this and it is an evident problem. Although some could argue against this because percentage of American citizens dying from alcohol is so small that it won't affect the majority of the citizens of America. People should know better and have some self-control. This is quite a good point but the truth is that the alcohol consumers lose control after the have had too many drinks and that’s when the fatalities enter the situation. These people could be completely innocent but alcohol has taken control over them and their lives are being taken from this. Most would agree that it is better to have 88,000 citizens alive rather than dead each year, so the alcohol laws need to be tightened. America may not prevent all of the deaths each year, but America certainly have the potential to prevent the majority of the deaths.

In conclusion, the population of the United States of America would want the government to tighten up the alcohol laws because too many citizens are abusing alcohol and things are getting out of control. This popular drug kills 88,000 people in America each year or 10 people every hour. That doesn’t even include injuries, street fights and very close calls, only the deaths. Some innocent people who have had alcohol taken control of them have died. Some underage drinkers that haven’t quite matured have died. Too many Americans have died and it is time that the American government introduces tighter alcohol laws before more human beings are killed by alcohol.
