Hollywood’s discrimination of Gender and ethnicity

Hollywood’s discrimination of Gender and ethnicity

In present time discrimination is most definitely expressed in Hollywood, most commonly in the forms of Racism and sexism[EW1] . All actors should have equal rights and opportunities despite their ethnic group, religion or gender. Recently Chris Rock became the first brown skinned host of the Oscars. The issue of discrimination in the U.S film industry needs to be addressed and provisions need to be made to make sure the industry become more inclusive as events involving 'Hollywood' are viewed by so many people around the world and at the moment it is a global crisis that an atrocious example [EW2] is being set for the younger population. Also Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about the pay gap between male and females, the sexism issue in Hollywood is another one that needs to be resolved. These events have brought to light issues that have been going on for many years in Hollywood.  [EW3]

White People’s Choice Award
At the most recent Oscars there was tension as many actors boycotted the event because they believe there isn’t enough ethnic diversity between award nominees. [EW4] Even though Chris Rock; the 2016 host and the only black person that has ever hosted the Oscars attended the event he definitely praised the actors who had the bravery to boycott it. [EW5] Will Smith was among the group that boycotted, he said “I think that diversity is the American superpower. That’s why we are great. So many different people from so many different places adding their ideas and their inspiration and their influences to this beautiful American gumbo”, and then he added “When I look at the series of nominations of the academy, it’s not reflecting that beauty” and he isn’t wrong as for the second year in a row, not a single non-white actor has been nominated for an award of any type at the Academy Awards. [EW6] In 2002 Halle Berry became the first black woman to win the best actress Academy Award[EW7] . After her win, Berry said the real celebration would come when black actresses and actors up for the major awards were so commonplace that race was not an issue. [EW8]

‘Aloha’ deemed racist
In a much broader view, forgetting the Oscars, Hollywood is still deemed racist. Over the years many controversial casting decisions have been made and many actors have seen to be racist in the ways they have played certain roles. [EW9] In the 2015 movie 'Aloha' Emma Stone's character 'Captain Allison Ng' was supposed to be played by someone who is a quarter Hawaiian and a quarter Chinese. The film makers were accused of 'Whitewashing’ the cast, white washing is a term used to describe how something has been removed from its original ethnic heritage. Another example is the 1961 portrayal of Mr Yunioshi done by Mickey Rooney in the classic film "Breakfast at Tiffany's” was a disgrace to the U.S film industry. Instead of the casting team finding an Asian actor to play the position, they had Rooney do it; an American actor born and bred in New York City. [EW10] Rooney faked a stereotypical Asian accent and taped his eyelids to make them look as if he was Asian. This is a prominent example of how back in the day Hollywood viewed East Asians, they called this ‘Yellow face’, similar to ‘Blackface’ which was again an issue with Hollywood and how Caucasian people would paint themselves brown to play the positions of African American people in plays and films. This is unacceptable and being such an aged example it demonstrates how long this issue has been around for. Movie star Will Smith says Hollywood is not prejudiced against black actors, just against unsuccessful actors. "The execs don't care about what colour you are, they care about how much money you make," he said, many people do not agree to his statement and even he has questioned it in the past.

Sexist pay gap
The Pay gap between men and women is another prominent problem for Hollywood and its discrimination issues. [EW11] This is an issue where men are being paid a significant amount more for acting in movies than woman are. Recently Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about this pay gap and she was backed up by Emma Watson and Bradley Cooper majorly. Lawrence and Cooper both acted in David O’Russels ‘American Hustle’ and Cooper was paid a significant amount more than Lawrence for doing the movie. Jennifer Lawrence is sick of the pay gap completely and she wasn’t getting anywhere with her battle, saying “I failed as a negotiator because I gave up early,” she admits. “I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need” then she added, “I’m over trying to find the ‘adorable’ way to state my opinion and still be likable. Fuck that.” Honestly there shouldn’t be a pay gap in Hollywood or any area of work frankly, you should be paid for the effort that goes in to the work and the quality of the end result[EW12] . This is the reason that the pay gap in Hollywood should be terminated.

327 nominations for woman, 1387 for men
Hollywood isn’t only sexist in ways involving money either; also the U.S film industry is known for its sexism in many other fields too[EW13] . [EW14] Females rarely ever get positions as directors, producers and screen writers even when they have the skills in order to do so. There are many film making companies in America that have the tendencies to just turn away a female or to choose a male over the female even if the females work is better; Emma Watson said “I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by woman”, the ratio would be much more even if there wasn’t a sexism problem but the job of a director is seen to being prominently a male opportunity in Hollywood. [EW15] The Oscars may also have a sexism problem as well as their racism one, women have received 327 nominations since 2006 while men have earned 1,387. Statistics show that this isn't as bad as what it may sound and is getting better. A study, “Gender Equality in 500 Popular Films,” looked at the top 100 grossing films between 2007 and 2012. [EW16] This study showed[EW17]  that the percentage of female produced films was increasing.

People believe that the issues with ethnic group and gender are definitely ones that need to be resolved by the U.S film industry before they can move much further in the modern world, otherwise the boycotted issue at the Oscars will get bigger and bigger before Hollywood plummets. Many more actors will continue to speak out about the issues in the U.S film Industry causing havoc for everyone involved in Hollywood[EW18] [EW19] [EW20] .

Donald Trump President? That Doesnt Sound Right

Donald Trump. We know him as the celebrity, the businessman, the billionaire, but only recently have we began to know him as the politician. The man who will be running for president of the United States of America in 2016, and this is a huge issue and a very horrible idea. Donald Trump is simply not presidential material. Some of the reasons why he cannot become president are exposed through these following ideas. He is self-centred, he thinks the only thing better than America is himself and that he believes has the right say whatever he wants to whoever he wants. He has a racist attitude to all Muslims and Mexican as he believes that all Muslims are terrorists and that they need to be prevented from entering America. Or that all Mexicans are "killers, rapists, criminals, convicts and drug dealers" (Trump, 2016) and they are stealing all of Americas jobs. And finally all of these ideas result in him making digging himself in to deep as he state many statements he is obviously not going to be able to keep. From these four points alone it is easy to see why Donald Trump as president will be the worst thing to ever happen to America and that the people of America need to see through his wealthy appearance to see him for the person he really is, and that person isn’t a president.

Donald Trump will pick on whoever is standing in his way on his road to power as an attempt to bring them down. This idea exposes a quality in Donald Trump that no leader of the United States should have. Abusive, Insulting, and rude are all words used to describe Donald Trump as he mindlessly insults people for their ethnicity, gender and disabilities. An example of this is when Donald insults Mexicans consistently throughout his presidential courier as he believes that "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best… they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bring crime. They’re rapists…” (Life Daily, 2016), which is not true as he has generalised the Mexican people to all be horrible people. He also believes that all Muslims are terrorists and that "When you get these terrorists, you have to take out their families… When they say they don't care about their lives, you have to take out their families." As if every single Muslim is out to get the people of America, which is obviously not the case as he is blaming the Muslims for things they almost all of them wouldn’t do to bring himself to power. With an attitude like Donald Trump’s where his head is high up in the clouds and he freely insults people whenever he feels like it America is going to fall because with a man like that representing their country, America will soon be in disputes with countries all over the world.

Another problematic idea Donald Trump stated occurred after the France bombings Donald Trump declared that he wanted to deport 11 million immigrants and stop all Muslim immigrants from entering the United States until he knows what’s going on. This is insulting to all Muslims as yet again he is generalising them to all be terrorists out to get America. He stated that "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on." (Cable News Network, 2016), This is a huge problem for American citizens because when Donald Trump, the big wealthy businessman turns up on their TV stating that all Muslims are terrorists, some people will actually believe him. This will cause some of the people of America to also generalise Muslims to be terrorists much like Donald Trump has which will cause people to treat Muslims differently because now they will treat them like terrorists. This is a huge problem for Muslims as they are all being treated like Terrorists all thanks to Donald Trump, this sounds a lot like when Hitler picked on the Jewish people to strike anger and fear into the people of his country to gain power.  Does America really want another power driven, self-centred, racist lunatic in charge of their country as like what happened in Germany during 1933?

‘The American Dream’, it’s something many people around the world hope to achieve. But according to Donald Trump, his idea of the American dream excludes Mexicans from this group of people as they are stealing good American jobs that should belong to good American people. He states that "You have to bring in jobs… you have to take the jobs back from Mexico." (Newsmax, June 2016) so he is pretty much blaming other countries such as Mexico for the lack of jobs in America. He believes that the solution to keeping American People working with American jobs is to build a huge wall across southern US and he is going to force the Mexican government to pay for it. He stated that “I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me – and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.” (Trump, 2016), So essentially he is getting the Mexican people to build a wall to keep themselves out. Although many people state this is quite possible as the Mexicans already owe billions of dollars to the US and they are heavily in debt, it is no real reason to have the wall there. The Mexican government have already made it quite clear that they will have nothing to do with the wall because there no possible way it can help the Mexicans. And as previously stated this is teaching the American people to be discriminative to the general Mexican public as Donald Trump floods the media with his outrageous statements against the Mexican people. Mexicans are not, as Donald would say, “killers, rapists, criminals, convicts and drug dealers" (Trump, 2016) and It’s not always easy to see through Donald’s rants of idiocy but people need to see that a good president of the United States should hold all of the qualities that Donald Trump doesn’t have because a real president isn’t racist.

Lastly, Donald Trump is always stating too many promises that he is obviously not going to be able to keep. Congress will never allow Donald to do many, if any of the things previously stated because his ideas such as building a wall to keep out Mexican immigrants, deporting 11 million immigrants and to stopping all Muslims from entering America are all just outrages statements Donald is using to control the Media. He does this because he knows that if his face is popping up into the heads of Americans on their televisions, their newspapers, and their phones as well as on Trump towers, Trump airlines and Trump University that he will also pop up into their head on voting day. Except what he isn’t taking into account is that these people who are voting are going to expect all the huge ideas he has stated he will do. Such as always keeping oil prices to and absolute minimum, he stated that "We have nobody in Washington that sits back and said, you're not going to raise that ******* price."(Trump 2012), And because Donald Trump being the god he thinks he is, he believes that he will be able to keep the prices low as well as keeping the taxes low will build a happy cheap life for his humble Americans. This won’t last. His supporters say that they like Donald Trump because “he tells it how it is”, this isn’t true and can be corrected to the more valid statement of ‘he tells is how he wants’. He will tell the American people whatever they want to hear to raise to power even if this results in him being known for stating false statements that he is not going to be able to follow up on.

The people of America need to realise that Donald Trump brings trouble and he is not “going to make America great again” (Trump, 2016) he is going to cause America to fall deep down into the depths of bankruptcy much like his many failed companies. The people of America need to see Donald’s racist personality to realise that even though he promises all these huge ideas of building walls, deporting millions, and lowering oil prices he is only telling the public whatever he thinks they want to hear in an attempt to gain power. America needs to ask itself, do we really want to lose everything they have worked so hard for? They need to seriously think about who they really want in charge of their country?

Obesity is a problem!

Obesity is a growing issue in America and the amount of obese Americans has increased a lot over the last 50 years, the main issue is that the oversized meals that are served at fast food restaurants contain way too much fat and calories. Instead of having insane amounts of meat in burgers the fast food restaurants should stick to the recommended meal sizes and cut down on drink sizes to try help lower the obesity numbers. Obesity isn't just being overweight because there are many side effects that many children and adults have to deal with. The amount of people that are obese in America is the highest amount in the world with 35% (114 million people) of the population dealing with obesity (Levi, 2004). Predictions for 2020 are that 80% of men in America will be obese by 2020 (The guardian, 2010).

No matter where you eat out the menu will have over-sized meals that contain way too much fat and calories for the average male. The American fast food restaurants are way too oversized and contain way too much calories and fat, too many Americans eat these fatty foods too often with little exercise. Each meal that is ordered from a fast food restaurant is over sized and full of fat. Most fast food restaurants are trying to find new ways to increase the fat in their meals creating a fat nation. In the last few years, Hardee’s, Burger King and Wendy's all have introduced 1,000-calorie-plus sandwiches stuffed with 12 ounces of beef, this is the amount of meat recommended over a period of two days for the average adult. The sugary drink portions are also oversized with quite a few restaurants that have introduced a 42 ounce (1.2 litres) drink and king-eleven introduced a 64 ounce (1.8 litres) drink. This drink contains about 800 calories which is about a third of the recommended calorie intake over a day for an average male and all those calories in one cup. American fast food restaurants create meals containing way to much fat and calories and many Americans are drawn in with the low prices.

Fast food restaurants should stick to the recommended meal sizes and cut down on drink sizes because the meal sizes are a major cause of Obesity in America. Each fast food meal contains more fat and calories than your average meal should have, some burgers contain the amount of meat recommended for two days. The drinks also contain high amounts of sugar and are served in massive portions which contain almost the amount of sugar recommended for two days. The average fast food meal is four times larger than it was in the 1950's and the sugary drinks has increased massively since then as well with a litre cup containing an ounce more sugar than the recommended amount of added sugars per day. In the last few years, Hardee’s, Burger King and Wendy's all have introduced 1,000-calorie-plus sandwiches stuffed with 12 ounces of beef which is the amount of meat recommended to be eaten over a two day period. For an adult to be eating the recommended amount of meat for two days, this is what leads to obesity.

There are many side effects to obesity and nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children in the United States deal with these side effects every day. Obesity can lead to many other diseases ranging from acute to chronic diseases and if worst comes to worst then it can lead to death. Obesity is something that should be dealt with, it shouldn’t just be shrugged off because it is a problem and the whole world is dealing with it. Obesity leads to several different health conditions such as cardio-vascular disease, cancer, depression, reduce in fertility, respiratory disease, cognitive disease and musculoskeletal and a large amount of Americas population suffer from these health conditions. Nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children in the United States deal with the health and emotional effects of obesity every day which is almost a third of Americas adult population and almost a fifth of Americas child population those numbers are still rising. With less fast food and more motivation to lose weight the numbers for obesity would start to drop and less people will be living with the health conditions that obesity can cause.

The rate of obesity in America is constantly growing and it's going to keep growing because each generation is lazier than the last and they keep eating fast food with no exercise to burn off the fat that they are gaining. Nearly 35% of Americans have obesity which is about 113 million people and about 30% of Americans are overweight which is about 97 million people is (Levi, 2004). The amount of overweight and obese people in America is 210 million which is 206 million more than the amount of people in New Zealand. Fast food is a cheap alternative to cooking but it is extremely unhealthy and is the main cause of obesity in America, too many people are drawn in by the cheap prices of the fatty meals. Fast food won’t have a bad effect if you only have it every two weeks but the average American spends about half their yearly food budget on fast food which is why there is so many people living with obesity in America. The rates of obesity now exceed 35 percent in three states which are Arkansas, West Virginia and Mississippi. 22 states have rates above 30 percent, 45 states are above 25 percent, and every state is above 20 percent. Arkansas has the highest adult obesity rate at 35.9 percent, while Colorado has the lowest at 21.3 percent. This is way too many people to be classified as obese and it is an issue that needs to be dealt with. More than a third of adults (34.9 percent) were obese as of 2011 to 2012 and more than two-thirds of adults were overweight or obese (68.6 percent) (Levi, 2004). Approximately 31.8 percent were either overweight or obese, this isn’t the children’s fault because their parents are the ones feeding them large amounts of fast food. The percentages of obesity keep growing and they aren't showing any signs of dropping, it is predicted that by 2020 almost 80 percent of Americans will be obese by 2020 (Theguardian, 2010). Obesity is a worldwide problem but if everyone committed to a healthier diet and regular exercise it wouldn’t be as much of a problem.

Obesity is a massive problem in America and it always will be unless something is done before its too late because obesity is rising and more than three quarters of America will be diagnosed with obesity by 2020 and more people will be obese as time goes by. Obesity has a solution but that won’t matter if people don’t commit to getting rid of obesity by taking an interdisciplinary approach involving the cooperation of the food industry with other stakeholders, such as the government, academia, and health care providers but the consumer will have to make healthy lifestyle choices at the individual level.  Many people suffer from obesity in America and the major reason for it is the oversized meals that are served at fast food restaurants (Obesity in America: A Growing Concern, 2013).

America land of freedom fight controversy with control

America land of freedom fight controversy with gun control.
Gun control in the United States has been reported as being out of control, although many Americans believe that all the intention over this issue is an overreaction. The Guardian Web News page reads “ Homicides by fire arms is 2.7% per 100,000 of the population.” Gun control doesn’t need to be stricter  as the death toll is low, they are used as a source of protection and it’s the people that kill not the guns.

The first point is that gun control doesn’t need to be stricter as the death toll is low for the amount of guns they own. Hub pages 2016  (JMiller17) reads that America had 30,000 deaths which is 27,000 times more than the countries of France, Australia, Japan and a few smaller countries which is equal to the population of America. But considering there are 235 million guns that are owned 300,000 deaths only accounts for just 0.000383% of the murders. Taking away their guns is only going to bring havoc to the streets as guns will be sold illegally on the black markets or in the streets.

My second point, Americas gun control doesn’t need to be stricter they just need to start focussing on the positives instead of the negatives. Americagunfacts.com has proven that over 200,000 women have used a gun to defend themselves from sexual abuse. Taking away what women use as there protection would leave them defenceless as they can still come in contact with people who have knives and their fists. If we take away women's only protection against violent men then we could continue to see increase in abuse and violence against women which will lead to a lot of problems in society homeless women, kids growing up without fathers and kids thinking violence in the home is normal.

Lastly, in America people are always complaining about how high the death rates are. There are legally 235,000,000 owned firearms in the United States Of America and there population is 323,173,171 and around 9000 people were killed by a fire arm, this means guns used for murder account for just 0.000383% of their population and that is considered to be quite a low percentage. Guns have been around for years and they have never brought this up in the past before so why now? It’s the kids of this generations thinking its “cool” you can't blame guns for peoples violence issues and stupidity, “Your genetics load the gun. Your lifestyle pulls the trigger. It’s the people who pull the trigger back” this quote elucidates that it's not the guns fault it’s the person who pulls the triggers .

In conclusion, The United States Of America do have some issues with gun control and how guns are used in the society. [But looking at all the advantages guns have brought to America from hunting to self defence is amazing.

Why is Obesity happening?

Imagine this, you walk onto a plane, walk down the aisle and sit down in your allocated seat. Someone comes and sits beside you and takes up nearly 2 seats. You’re squished into the corner thinking why he doesn’t lose some weight. This happens to many citizens each year and is a growing concern in America. Some of the reasons Obesity is a huge health issue is because of people eating too much junk food; Not as active as they should be; and people aren't getting enough sleep. These all influence your weight and should be thought about carefully.

Firstly, Citizens in America are eating too much junk food which is affecting their weight. They are finding it is much cheaper and easier to go to a fast food outfit and purchase food rather that going to the supermarket and purchasing fruit and vegetables. But why wouldn’t you? Fast food is cheaper and easy while vegetables are expensive and time consuming. A study by Stephanie Stiavetti reveals how bad for you fast foods really are. They consume large amounts of sugar, salt, sodium, and Trans fat (2015).  All of these affect your blood pressure and can increase the chances of getting type 2 diabetes. People don’t think of these Health Affects therefore the reason more and more people in America are gaining weight and becoming obese.

Secondly, Citizens in America are really falling behind on how much exercise they do each day. They make excuses saying they have no time to fit exercise into their daily schedule. With Work or school and social time, it doesn’t come easy. You have to make time in which to exercise otherwise you’ll forget about it. A study by Huffpost healthy living reveals how much of a problem 41% of American citizens go through each day. They don’t get the daily recommended exercise therefore the reason more and more people in America are gaining weight and become obese (2012). Another study from Maria Hagan reveals that Bangladesh is the most active country for exercise with only 10% don’t exercise enough. Bangladesh citizens are exceptionally active due to the country’s primary industries which require physical labour (2014).

Lastly, Citizens in America aren't getting enough sleep. Think about it? You’re feeling a little sleepy at work, so you drink a cup of coffee to wake you up and some slice for an energy buzz. After work you decide not to go to the gym because you to tired. You miss out on your daily exercise and grab some fast food because you’re too tired to cook. All of the unhealthy foods you have eaten throughout the day is bad for your diet. When you finally want to go to bed, you can't sleep because of all the high energy, unhealthy foods you have eaten. A study by NHS choices reveals all the dangers of not getting enough sleep. The dangers increase obesity, heart disease and diabetes and it also shortens your life expectancy.(2015) The study demonstrates that a solid night’s sleep can be essential for a long and healthy life.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why obesity is a growing concern in America such as eating junk food, not getting enough exercise, and not getting enough sleep. The country of America should be more like Bangladesh with America 41% (Huffpost healthy living, 2012) vs Bangladesh 10% (Hagen, 2013) citizens’ obesity rate. If American citizens keep going the way they are, the percentage of people will keep on rising and rising.
